What's new with the 2026 Cherokee

This is a ground up redesign, not a refresh. The 2026 Cherokee is Jeep's first hybrid without a plug, and Jeep now positions it as a midsize SUV rather than a compact one, with a boxier shape and roughly 30 percent more cargo room than the last generation.

• 4x4: Every Cherokee gets Jeep's Active Drive 4x4 system with a standard rear axle disconnect, which is uncommon in this class. A terrain management system adds Auto, Sport, Snow and Sand/Mud modes, and 8 inches of ground clearance gives it a 19.6 degree approach angle, a 29.4 degree departure angle and an 18.8 degree breakover angle.
• Cargo: 33.6 cubic feet behind the second row, expanding to 68.3 cubic feet with the seats folded.
• Towing: Up to 3,500 pounds.
• Price: Starting at $36,995 including destination.

What's new with the 2026 Grand Cherokee

The Grand Cherokee didn't get redesigned, but it got something arguably more interesting: a refreshed exterior and interior, an available 12.3-inch touchscreen, and an all new turbocharged 2.0-liter Hurricane 4 Turbo engine.

• Engines: Laredo and Laredo X keep the familiar 3.6L Pentastar V6 at 293 hp and 260 lb-ft. Laredo Altitude, Limited, Limited Reserve and Summit get the Hurricane 4 Turbo, which makes 324 hp and 332 lb-ft. Every 2026 Grand Cherokee uses an eight speed automatic, and the lower four trims offer rear or four wheel drive while Limited Reserve and Summit are 4WD only.
• Towing: Up to 6,200 pounds, regardless of which engine or drivetrain you pick.
• Fuel economy: The V6 is EPA rated at 22 mpg combined and the Hurricane 4 Turbo at 23 mpg combined.
• Cargo: 37.7 cubic feet behind the second row, and 70.8 cubic feet with the rear seats down.
• Price: Starting at $39,990.

Go with the Cherokee if you're commuting, hauling kids and gear, and want a Jeep that doesn't punish you at the pump. It's the better fit for a two car household where this one is the everyday runner. Standard 4x4 means it handles a Hudson Valley winter without you having to option your way there.

Go with the Grand Cherokee if you tow. A 3,500 pound rating covers a couple of jet skis or a small utility trailer. A 6,200 pound rating covers a real boat, a horse trailer or a decent sized camper.
